Student art adds life to downtown doors

Aspiring artists from four San Jose High Schools have put their works on public view. Their “canvases” are 25 double- and triple-panel doors outside the Fairmont San Jose, Pavilion building, San Jose Repertory Theatre and Camera 12 Cinemas. The art is visible to thousands of passersby on foot and passengers in vehicles.

The Downtown Doors program, now in its eighth year, has grown from four doors in 2003. More than 100 entrants from many San Jose high schools participate each competition.

Judging takes place in March and April. The process to digitize, enlarge and transfer the artwork onto vinyl adhesive decals occurs in April and May.

Vibrant student artworks surprise and delight San Jose pedestrians

Always provocative, intriguing and compelling, 16 artworks created by Santa Clara County high school students have been added to downtown San Jose’s urban landscape, as part of the Downtown Doors program administered by the San Jose Downtown Foundation.

The original pieces are digitized, enlarged and transferred onto vinyl adhesive decals and then installed on otherwise stark double- and triple-paned utility doors at sidewalk level at the center city’s core.

Since its beginnings in 2003 when four doors were enhanced with student artwork, 106 works of art have been put on display for thousands of passersby taking note of Downtown Doors.  In 2011, judges selected 16 works from 91 submitted by students from 10 San Jose and Cupertino high schools.  Overall, the art pieces by high school artists grace 46 Downtown Doors, an increase of 10 new doors over 2010.

“It’s exciting to watch this little but significant program grow,” said Diana Beechie, San Jose Downtown Foundation president. “It touches the lives of so many people, from the artists and their families and teachers to the pedestrians to find cause to look at one of the works and take a moment to ponder it before continuing their day.”

As a result of the competition, several students in the past decided to continue pursuing careers as artists, Beechie noted, adding: “And studies show that students involved in the arts are more apt to stay in school and get good grades.”

Downtown building owners and property managers are happy to contribute their doors as “canvasses” for the art.  The 46 locations for art are scattered around 17 properties.  The Fairmont San Jose hotel, alone, has 10 Downtown Doors sites.  New locations this year include one of Adobe’s towers, Larkspur Sainte Claire Hotel, Hilton San Jose, Parkside Hall, 33 South Third Street Apartments and Colonnade Apartments.

Sponsors for the art include: 1st ACT Silicon Valley, Adobe, Barry Swenson Builder, Catered Too!, City of San Jose, Cornish & Carey Commercial, Digital Realty Trust, eBay Foundation, Fairmont San Jose, Forest City Commercial Management, Jeppesen, Law Offices of Willoughby, Stuart, Bening, Inc., On Your Mark Graphics, Reel Grobman & Associates, Robinson & Wood, Inc., Rotary Club of San Jose North, Xactly Corp., and San Jose Downtown Association.

A reception June 3 for the artists at Eulipia Restaurant coincides with the Sub-Zero Festival and South First Fridays gallery crawl.
