Mostly comprising members of San Jose’s premiere jazz orchestra Nineteen, Leizure 7 was born during the months long pandemic lockdown. The project started as a way for these musicians to “work out” their jazz muscles from home: a Blue Mitchell transcription here, a Clifford septet transcription there, the discovery of all the Birth of the Cool arrangements in one book, and before long there was a setlist with no band to play it. Leizure 7 plays the dynamic, intriguing tunes you don’t hear at the cocktail lounge: that 3rd track on the miscellaneous Art Blakey album that always catches your ear, works from Lee Morgan to Hank Mobley to Oliver Nelson and beyond.
LEIZURE 7 Boptet features Bob Aron on keys, Tom Wieske on drums, Randy Barber on Bass, Eric Raeburn on Alto & Tenor Sax, James Pascual on Tenor & Bari Sax, Lorenzo Perez on Trumpet, and CJ Posner on Trombone.
