Misner & Smith

July 30, 2022 @ 8:00 pm

$25 – $35

Tabard Theatre announces award-winning folk duo Misner & Smith returning on July 30, 2022 at 8pm. The show will be available both in-person and livestreamed. For those unable to experience the concert live, the high-quality multi-camera recording will also be available On-Demand for two weeks following the show. Single tickets for each show are $25 for General Admission and $35 for reserved Cabaret seating. Proof of vaccination is required for in-person patrons. Vaccine cards will be checked at the door. Masking is encouraged but not required.

Though they played a livestream show from Tabard Theatre’s stage in November of 2020, this event will mark the very first in-person performance for the duo in San Jose.  Hailing from Northern California, Misner & Smith’s music is a combination of soaring vocal harmonies, extremely tight instrumental arrangements, and story-filled, poetic songwriting, adding up to some of the most electrifying music on the scene today. The band’s sound harkens back to the bedrock of American rock & folk, but the diversity of styles and genres are one of the things that set M&S apart. They can shake the walls like a freight train and then quiet the room to a whisper in a single song. Although they each alone produce vocals that could easily lead a band independently, Sam and Megan sing with one voice, with music that captures longing and belonging in the same moment and a combination of musical dexterity and vocal prowess that packs a punch.

Misner & Smith tour extensively both in the U.S. and overseas. Headlining regularly at venues such as the Freight & Salvage, and the Palms Playhouse, they have also appeared at The Kate Wolf Music Festival, San Francisco Folk Festival, and can be heard on radio dials all over the world. They recently celebrated over a decade of making music together; a decade that has produced five albums, including their most recent release, Headwaters.

Sam and Megan’s musical relationship began when they were cast together in a production of Woody Guthrie’s American Song. Through that experience, Sam and Megan discovered a mutual love of roots music, and in particular, harmony singing. With intricate, often 5-part vocal arrangements of Guthrie’s songs as the backbone of the show, the special blend that Misner & Smith have become known for became evident right away. Since then, the two have acted in the play over a hundred times around the country, including runs at venues such as Marin Theatre Company, The Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse, The Colorado Shakespeare Festival, among others, and they are featured on the official cast album, recorded live in 2012.

Inspired by both music and theater, their influences contain equal parts playwrights, songwriters, actors, and musicians, so they are a more-than-fitting addition to Tabard’s 20th Anniversary season.

Tabard Theatre (formerly Theatre on San Pedro Square) — The Destination for Arts Discovery —  is located in the heart of historic San Pedro Square in downtown San Jose amid a bustling restaurant district.  This intimate and unique venue brings a touch of Manhattan to the South Bay with its rustic yet edgy feel. Old brick walls, plush leather seats, antique wood plank floors, sweeping red velvet drapes and a 35-foot mahogany bar create a casual cabaret atmosphere. The three-quarter round cabaret stage— described by artists as “a room that feels big and small at the same time” — is the perfect setting for live music and theatre.
