Transborder Translation: New Poetry from Latin America

May 9 @ 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Join us for an unforgettable celebration of the art of language, culture, and poetic expression on May 9th from 12–2 PM in MLK Library Room 225. This special event will feature live poetry readings that bring contemporary Latin American voices to life in English for the very first time, thanks to the creative and thoughtful work of SJSU student translators! The debut translations promise to offer fresh perspectives and moving interpretations of powerful poetic works.

We are honored to welcome Ilana Luna, professional literary translator and Arizona State University professor, who will take part in our bilingual poetry reading, alongside students, and share her insights in a compelling conversation with Cheyla Samuelson, Associate Professor of Spanish at SJSU. Together, they will discuss their collaborative journey as “co-translators” for the poetry of Cristina Rivera Garza, one of the most innovative literary voices in Latin America today. All are welcome to join this celebration of literature, language, and the transformative impact of translation!
