This project was designed to capture 20 years of history and social justice, concepts that are deeply rooted in our city’s heritage. The artist, design, and facilitators were all the original creators from 2004.
In 2004, artists Paul Urich and Chris Duncan were commissioned by Anno Domini Gallery to create a mural at the corner of E. Santa Clara St. and S. 4th St., honoring SJSU students Tommie Smith and John Carlos. “Homage” is a tribute to Smith and Carlos for their “silent gesture” of black gloved, raised fists for human rights at 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. The recent restoration efforts have added vibrant colors and new symbolic elements ensuring a revived call to action to protect human rights and social justice in fostering a more equitable society.
