Downtown San José’s Summer 2024: A Season of Events and Festivities

The summer season in San José is officially here, offering a packed calendar of events, art places and spaces to dine and gather with friends and family. In this guest blog post, Robert Robledo, Director of Marketing and Communications with the San José Downtown Association, shares a bit about what to expect this summer.

Summer in Downtown San José is a time of vibrant energy and endless activities. From music festivals to cultural celebrations, the downtown area transforms into a bustling hub of entertainment and community spirit. Whether you’re a local or visiting for the first time, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. This guide will help you navigate the best summer events that Downtown San José has to offer, ensuring you don’t miss out on any of the excitement.

“There is lots of exciting events coming up this summer,” said Alex Stettinski, San José Downtown Association CEO.  “With our new mural project just completed in San Pedro Square, to the many events coming up this summer, there is sure to be something for everyone in our diverse community.”

Weekly and Monthly Festivities

In addition to these major events, Downtown San José will host a variety of weekly and monthly activities:

  • Pobladores Night Market: Every Thursday till August 1, from 5:30- 9 p.m. enjoy live music, artisan vendors, food trucks, and a beer garden at Parque de los Pobladores in the heart of #DTSJ’s SoFA District.
  • Block Parties

Special Events to Look Forward To

Mark your calendars for these special summer highlights:

  • Starlight Free Outdoor Movies: Starting July 6 with “Barbie”.  Experience the magic of outdoor cinema with your family & friends as we showcase four beloved classics on the big screen under the stars at St. James Park.  Movies kick off at dusk, but the excitement starts before! Join us for games and activities leading up to each screening.
  • CityDance: A monthly dance and music series beginning June 20.
  • Make Music Day San José: A city-wide celebration of music on June 21
  • Dia De San Juan Salsa Fest: Get ready to dance the night away as MACLA and San Jose Jazz team up to bring a vibrant celebration of Puerto Rican culture. Join us on June 21, 2024 from 5-10 PM for an unforgettable fiesta at Parque de Los Pobladores (in front of MACLA) in downtown San José. 
  • Dine Downtown Restaurant Promotion: From July 11-21, enjoy special menus and chef’s specials at participating restaurants.
  • Music in the Park: Summer concert series that takes place in Plaza de Cesar Chavez featuring El Tri (June 22), Los Van Van (July 26), The Beach Boys (July 28), Steel Pulse (August 16) and J Boog (September 22)

San José’s key venues are gearing up for a season of unforgettable performances:

  • SAP Center: Hosting events like Hombres G (June 29), Pepe Aguilar: Hasta Los Hues (July 19) and Monster Jam (August 9-11)
  • San Jose Civic: Featuring Bill Burr Live (June 19-22), Hasan Minhaj (July 12-13), RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars Live (August 15)
  • Center for Performing Arts: The Little Mermaid (June 20-22), Peter Pan (June 25-30), Ali Wong live (August 8-11), Frozen (August 21 – September 1)
