Malama Aina – Care for the Land is a powerful mural that’s been a part of Downtown San Jose’s public art scene since 2023.
Located on the side of Pono Hawaiian Grill at 86 N. Market St., this vibrant piece by artist Taylor Reinhold was completed just before the devastating fires in Maui. Its message—Malama Aina, meaning “care for the land”—is a call to honor and protect the environment while reflecting the deep relationship between people and nature.
The mural also celebrates the culture, traditions, and contributions of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities. Reinhold collaborated with Santa Cruz-based Made Fresh Crew artists Erik Smiley and Casey Landaker to bring the piece to life.
Take a moment to explore this mural and many others that enrich the streets of Downtown San Jose.
