B.A.D. Musical Theatre, the South Bay’s newest, edgiest community theatre group, returns after the success of ROCK Cabaret with their very first full-fledged musical production, AMERICAN PSYCHO (book by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, music and lyrics by Duncan Sheik, based on the novel by Bret Easton Ellis). B.A.D. is thrilled to present this bloody dark horror comedy with a synth-pop score, set within the affluent yuppie culture of the 1980s.

Narcissist and pop culture buff Patrick Bateman has everything money can buy. He is the Adonis of Wall Street, a god, and a maniac. His violent rampages throughout New York City have become increasingly frequent. This man is clearly a murderous villain, so why does society justify his behavior? How far can Patrick’s power, wealth, and impressive physique take him? This story is eerily relevant, given our current state of political unrest and election anxiety.

B.A.D. leans into the absurdity that is this man’s psyche through intimate and immersive staging, creating a bloody good in-your-face experience. The production is staged non-traditionally in a film studio within a concave white cyclorama. Retro projections engulf the minimal set and portal the audience into the insanity of Patrick’s mind. The production presents a nostalgic 80s vibe with its vintage wardrobe and live keyboard and electronica accompaniment.

B.A.D. Musical Theatre strives to put the “community” back into community theatre by prioritizing representation, accessibility, innovation, and collaboration in their mission. B.A.D. literally stands for Bay Area Diversity. In AMERICAN PSYCHO, Patrick embraces the shallow cookie-cutter images that consumerist culture has produced. On the contrary, this cast is not restricted to certain body types, ethnicities, genders, and neurotypes. The audience sees what the antihero can not: the true multifaceted identities of the individual that represents our true community of artists.

Join us for a unique production featuring new faces, rad talent, and an unyielding poise that has never been seen in the South Bay community theatre scene. AMERICAN PSYCHO runs at StageOne Creative Spaces, 196 N 3rd St., San Jose, CA 95112 from July 12-21, 2024. TICKETS ARE ON SALE NOW AT www.badmusicaltheatre.com.

Evening performances are at 7:00 pm on Fridays and Saturdays and matinees are at 2:00pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets range from $28-$30. The roles of Patrick, Evelyn, and Jean are double cast. Actors in these roles will alternate (see dates). This production contains mature thematic material, including sexual and physical violence, adult language, weapon use, and substance abuse. It is not recommended for those under age 18.
