Legally Blue

Legally Blue’s music is steeped in the vintage tradition of T-Bone Walker, B.B. King, the Allman Brothers, Gene Krupa and Jack McDuff, with a dose of Count Basie, Horace Silver and Billie Holiday. Legally Blue focuses on reinvention—creative arrangements heavy on dynamics, clean lines and tight solos. Rooted in the blues, their set list ranges from some of the first blues tunes to entertaining originals with the blues at their core.
The group developed through its relationship with San Jose Jazz. Their sound spontaneously combusted during a Summer Fest jam session when guitarist Aart de Geus, bassist Chris Wilder, keyboardist John Keating and singer Joanne Wegener laid down “Stormy Monday,” blowing away the crowd. A Summer Fest favorite, Legally Blue has made numerous live and radio appearances over the years.
Later, drummer Mike West and soundman Dave Nielson completed the group’s distinctive sound. After seven years together, Joanne and John transitioned out of the group while Cheryl Scales, a crowd favorite for her soulful vocals and commanding presence, joined in 2017.
