News Release: Six More Businesses Launch as Part of Downtown San José Pop-Up Retail Program

SAN JOSE, Calif. (August 9, 2024) – The City of San José, in collaboration with the San José Downtown Association and MOMENT, launched the third MOMENT Downtown San José project, MOMENT Post Street, today with a ribbon cutting of six new shops in two storefronts along Post St. in the Qmunity District.

The six storefronts and their locations are:

21 Post Street (620 square feet) – storefront name will be Cub n‘ Cony:

      • Malisa Suchanya: Local artist specializing in fine art, prints, stationery, and accessories;
      • Sudibear: Local artist who celebrates powerful femmes, fairy tales and nature through illustration and a homemade brand of street-soft apparel.

23 Post Street (1,744 square feet):

        • Tiny Keyboard Shop: Specialty artist that sells mechanical keyboards, handmade keycaps, and gaming accessories. Having found success at MOMENT San Pedro, this larger space will allow for expanded product and workshop offerings and will serve as the anchor tenant for this retail cluster;
        • It’s Kleine: Local illustrator offering hand-designed goods that focus on everyday objects and moments;
        • Rose Gold Jelly: Artist who turns her love for food, gaming, animals, and cats into stationary products, plushies, and apparel;
        • Neko-Oi: Local artist selling home goods and accessories inspired by cats and Asian culture.

Funded by the City of San José’s Office of Economic Development and Cultural Affairs (OEDCA) and managed by the San Jose Downtown Association and MOMENT, the program significantly lowers the barriers for local creative small businesses to establish their retail storefront in downtown San José. The program includes space improvement grants, affordable rents, and extensive marketing assistance.

“MOMENT has activated the Paseo and San Pedro Square — and now, we’re expanding our pop-up retail program to Post Street,” said San José Mayor Matt Mahan. “We’re creating opportunities for new entrepreneurs to experiment and grow while offering unique shopping experiences for visitors and residents alike. Innovative programs like this one are exactly why our Downtown is recovering faster than anywhere else in the state.”

MOMENT Post Street is the third project of the MOMENT Downtown San José Program, which has placed high-quality tenants in long-time vacant spaces in multiple districts downtown: MOMENT San Pedro Square (four businesses) and Paseo de San Antonio (five businesses). MOMENT Paseo opened in May 2024.

“Our vision to create more vibrancy and lower barriers for business to enter into the marketplace continues, with the opening of MOMENT Post Street”, said Alex Stettinski, CEO of the San Jose Downtown Association. “Come out and enjoy the two long-time vacant storefront spaces on Post Street, which have now been converted into an exciting cluster of retail vibrancy featuring six creative small businesses, most of which are owned by queer women of color.”

MOMENT Post Street will boost the growth of the already burgeoning LGBTQ+ Qmunity District on Post Street.

“The objective for bringing MOMENT to Post Street has consistently been to introduce businesses that harmonize with the existing community,“ said Audrey Yeung, Program Manager at MOMENT. “We take pride in the fact that most of the new establishments are LGBTQIA+-owned and all are open to everyone.”
